During the year, Contrack Group established a training program in Afghanistan to improve the construction skills of its local labor force. Based on its early success, Contrack decided to expand its program offering additional courses in plumbing, electrical work, masonry, carpentry, steel fixing, concrete formwork and painting. The trainees received a daily stipend in addition to food and transportation and were awarded a certificate of completion. As the number of trainees increased, Contrack decided to build a separate two story training center in Kabul complete with classrooms and workshop areas.
The Contrack training center has been visited by officials from the United Nations, Afghan Ministry of Education, USAID and the US Army Corps of Engineers. Recently, the Contrack training center began to accept disabled students and has graduated its first class of hearing impaired trainees. More than 80% of the graduates of the program are employed by Contrack on its various humanitarian construction projects in Afghanistan. Contrack is now planning to build additional training centers in other parts of the country where Contrack has significant construction work.
